Aug. 24 and 31 and Sept. 8, 6 - 7:15 p.m.
Socially distanced. Limit of 30 participants. Attend one or all of the series.
The Alameda Neighborhood Association is proud to host Dr. James Mason a diversity, equity, and inclusion expert to lead a three-part community discussion on bias and creating welcoming environments.
As the U.S. moves deeper into the 21st century, people are more likely to encounter greater diversity in terms of neighbors, co-workers, classmates, and others. In the face of diversity, people often struggle with issues of implicit bias, or attitudes or perceptions (stereotypes) that unwittingly affect our views of and interactions with people at an unconscious level). These biases are deeply embedded in our cultural symbols and institutions. The first part of this series will focus on identifying our biases in order to promote justice and equity, and improve inter-cultural or -group interactions.
In order to relieve oppression and promote equity and inclusion, well intentioned people being assets for diversity need tools and strategies for gracefully intervening on behalf of diverse and vulnerable peoples to ensure respectful and harmonious cross-cultural interactions.
